The Big Lawn Bowl

Blue is the interesting choice. Lawn bowls are traditionally black or brown, and the modern coloured bowls that have become common are a relatively recent development – so a bright blue one signals a contemporary game rather than the sport's older image. For a club trying to attract members younger than its existing ones, that is a considered decision rather than an aesthetic accident.

Two tonnes also means it is not going anywhere, which matters for an object at a club entrance.

This is the second giant lawn bowl in the catalogue, after the one at Manly Bowls Club in Brisbane, and both illustrate the same thing: the suburban and coastal bowls club as a piece of social infrastructure that has had to work hard to survive. Greens are expensive, memberships aged, and land values in coastal New South Wales are punishing. A club investing in a monument is a club intending to continue.

Lake Cathie sits between Port Macquarie and Laurieton on a coastal lake, in a district with a very high proportion of retirees – which is both the traditional bowls demographic and, increasingly, the clubs' problem as that generation ages out.

The unanswered questions are any date at all, the person responsible and its size.
