FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Big Koala is the eighty-eighth sculpture on a trail of ninety-one, and the only one of them that is oversized.
The Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail is built from roughly ninety one-metre fibreglass koalas, hand-painted by local artists across the New South Wales mid-north coast, with designs promoting koala and wildlife conservation, the environment and cultural heritage. It has won gold for Tourist Attractions in the 2022 NSW Tourism Awards and Best Sculpture Trail in Australia. This one breaks the format: at 2.5 metres and finished in gold, The Big Koala – Spirit of All Koalas is the trail's landmark rather than another entry in it, and it took Best Landmark Sculpture in Australia – silver in 2022, gold in 2023.
