Big Golf Ball – Grindelwald

Grindelwald itself is the more remarkable object. It is a Swiss-themed village built north of Launceston from the 1980s by the Swiss-born businessman Roelf Vos, who founded a Tasmanian supermarket chain – chalets, a lake, alpine detailing and street names like Waldhorn Drive, in the middle of the Tamar Valley. It is one of the more committed pieces of themed development in Australia.

A giant golf ball is therefore mildly incongruous in a way that suits the place. Nothing about Grindelwald is contextually inevitable.

Golf balls remain the most duplicated subject in the whole tradition – Palmerston North, Rotorua, Te Poi, Clayton South, Hervey Bay, Darwin, Huonville and here – for the same reasons every time: cheap to fabricate, unmistakable, and solving the identical visibility problem that every course and range faces.

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania's principal wine district and the resort sits within that visitor economy.
