FIELD GUIDE
The story
The giant frilled-neck lizard at Erldunda is reported to have appeared in the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and it now lives in a shed beside a roadhouse on the Stuart Highway.
If that is right, it is one of the more remarkable journeys any of these objects has made. The Sydney opening ceremony was watched by an audience in the billions and featured enormous puppet and prop creatures moving through the stadium; the idea that one of them ended up in the Northern Territory desert, three hundred kilometres from Alice Springs, is exactly the sort of afterlife these objects have.
