FIELD GUIDE
The story
There is a giant echidna in a shed at Erldunda, and the same source says it was in the Sydney Olympics.
The claim is that the sculpture starred in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Games – an event watched by an audience in the billions, in which enormous puppet and prop creatures moved through the stadium. If true, it is a remarkable afterlife for a piece of ceremony production: from Stadium Australia to a shed beside a roadhouse at the Stuart and Lasseter Highway junction, three hundred kilometres south of Alice Springs.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Current NT Big Things guides continue to place the giant echidna at Erldunda Roadhouse, while the roadhouse itself remains an active traveller stop at the Stuart and Lasseter Highway junction. The sculpture is reported as being housed in a shed rather than functioning as a conventional roadside object.
ACCESS
Restricted roadhouse-site sculpture. Current operator-confirmed public viewing arrangements and exact display position remain unresolved; direct routing is deliberately withheld.
