The story
There is a Springfield in New Zealand, and in 2007 that was worth a giant doughnut.
The Simpsons Movie was released that year, and its promotional campaign made much of the fact that Springfield is one of the most common town names in the United States – and, as it turned out, not only there. The film's promotional team gifted the New Zealand Springfield a giant pink sprinkled doughnut, and a small Canterbury settlement on the road to Arthur's Pass acquired a landmark with no connection whatsoever to its own history.
That is unusual enough to be the point. Nearly every Big Thing in this catalogue argues something about its town: what it grows, catches, mines or shears. This one argues nothing. It arrived because of a coincidence of naming and a marketing budget, and the town kept it anyway – as one New Zealand travel account put it, it has nothing to do with local history, but everybody loves it.
The doughnut now standing is concrete, a durable successor to earlier versions of the landmark. Springfield sits on State Highway 73 on the run from Christchurch up to the Southern Alps and Arthur's Pass, and Selwyn District Council continues to present the town as a traveller stop on that route. Current New Zealand Big Things guides still identify the doughnut as its defining roadside attraction.
It is, in the end, a piece of foreign film advertising that a New Zealand town adopted, maintained and rebuilt in more permanent material. Nineteen years on it has outlasted the campaign that produced it by some distance.

ACCESS
The Springfield Doughnut remains a public roadside attraction around 45 Tramway Road. Current mapped sources place the attraction at this site, but object-level coordinates conflict with older records, so PBT publishes a site-level point rather than claiming an exact sculpture pin. A preferred lawful vehicle arrival is still to be independently map-checked.
The Springfield Doughnut is confirmed at the 45 Tramway Road roadside site, but current object-level coordinates conflict with older records and a preferred lawful vehicle arrival is not yet independently verified.
