FIELD GUIDE
The story
Two hundred kilometres inland from where it was built, a concrete Ayrshire now presides over a heritage village. The Big Cow was a Sunshine Coast institution long before it reached the Darling Downs. A giant concrete Ayrshire, it belonged to a dairy-themed attraction that generations of Queensland families visited, and when that closed the cow faced the usual choice between a truck and a tip.
It got the truck. In 2020 it was moved inland to Highfields Pioneer Village, north of Toowoomba, where it now anchors a working heritage museum rather than a roadside attraction. The village describes it as seven times larger than life.
