The story

A cheese wedge at a working cheese factory, which is a rarer arrangement than it sounds.

A great many food-themed Big Things stand near a shop, or near where the crop used to be grown, or beside a highway with no production anywhere in sight. This one is at Maleny Cheese, where the dairy products are actually made and then served in the café on site – a menu of house-made specialty dishes, oozy baked brie with bread, raclette over potatoes in winter, and the Maleny Cheeseboard as the year-round signature.

The Blackall Range earns it. This is old dairy country in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, high enough and wet enough for genuine pasture, and Maleny was a dairying district long before it was a tourism one. The Maleny Dairies operation and the surrounding farms are a continuation of that rather than a revival.

A wedge is also the correct shape to build. A whole wheel would read as a cylinder or a drum; the wedge, with its triangular face and curved rind, is the outline that says cheese instantly from a moving car. It is the same design logic as the watermelon at Wantirna South, where the cut cross-section does the work.

Maleny holds two entries in this catalogue – this and the Big Barrel at nearby Bald Knob, whose operating status is disputed. The hinterland has quietly accumulated a small cluster.

Its proportions, the material used and the date did not survive into any source.
