FIELD GUIDE
The story
Nearly forty years standing, one move – and that move happened because the building it belonged to stopped being a visitor centre.
It went up in 1988 – Australia's bicentenary year, which produced a notable crop of oversized objects – at a visitor centre south of Townsville, where its job was to slow down traffic coming up the Bruce Highway. It stayed there until around 2013. After that it was relocated to the Murray Sporting Complex, also known locally as Brolga Park, where it stands today.
