FIELD GUIDE

The story

Oralia is a golden orb spider six metres across, strung on aircraft cable, and the cable is not a shortcut – it is the web.
Amanda Feher built her from copper, galvanised steel and aircraft cable, at roughly six by 4.8 by 2.3 metres, and the material choice does something clever. A real golden orb weaver is defined less by the animal than by the structure it makes: an enormous, strong, faintly golden web that can span gaps between trees and is tough enough to catch small birds. Using aviation cable to suspend and describe that web gives the sculpture the one property the real thing has and most spider sculptures lack – actual tension.
