FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Beaver was built to be thrown away. She was made a few decades ago from a styrofoam mould to appear in a maple syrup commercial, and was due for disposal as soon as the cameras stopped.
Raelene stepped in, bought her, put weather-resistant paint on her and put her on display at the Butterfly Farm on Wilberforce Road – one of the more literal rescues on record, and the reason a Canadian animal with no connection whatever to the Hawkesbury became a local landmark.
