FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant banana outside a fishing shop is a strange combination, and the explanation is that the fishing shop came second.
When the building went up in the late 1980s, half of it was a fruit shop, and the owner had plans to open more stores around the country. The banana was made by Michael McEvoy, who afterwards tried his luck with a second Big Banana at Carnarvon in Western Australia – a venture that, by the account available, did not come off.

WHAT TO EXPECT
A genuine local Big Thing dating from the late 1980s. Mackay media still promotes it as a selfie stop, and a July 2026 commercial-property listing continues to market the site explicitly as the “Big Banana”.
ACCESS
Navigate to 25 Harbour Road, North Mackay. The commercial site has off-street parking; use lawful onsite access and do not stop on Harbour Road or Palmer Street solely for a photograph.
