FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Avocado is part of the farm tour, which makes it one of the few oversized fruits you meet in the middle of an experience rather than at the gate.
Tropical Fruit World at Duranbah, just inland from the Tweed coast, includes the avocado in its farm-tour experience, and NSW Government material confirms the attraction operating at 29 Duranbah Road.
The property is genuinely unusual. It grows an enormous range of tropical and subtropical fruit – well beyond the handful of species that reach supermarkets – and the tour is built around tasting things most Australians have never heard of. In that context the giant avocado is not decoration but a marker for the plantation's best-known crop.
The timing of the avocado's rise is worth noting. When this attraction was established, the avocado was still a slightly exotic item in Australian kitchens; it has since become one of the most-consumed fruits in the country and a serious export industry, with the Northern Rivers among the significant growing regions. A monument built to an unusual fruit has been overtaken by the fruit becoming ordinary.
The Duranbah district sits in the caldera of an extinct volcano, and the red basalt soils are the reason so much grows here so well.
Because the avocado sits within a paid attraction rather than on the roadside, access follows the venue – which is why this record is marked restricted.
As for the height – nothing.
