FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Big Ammonite is made out of windmill parts, which is a genuinely inspired solution to a difficult sculptural problem.
An ammonite is a logarithmic spiral of chambered shell, and reproducing that curve at scale is hard. Windmill parts – the curved blades of a bore-water windmill head – already describe arcs, and assembling them into a spiral produces exactly the right form using components every property in the district has lying in a heap somewhere.
