FIELD GUIDE

The story

A dairy shop built in the shape of its own product still sells milkshakes in Spokane's Garland District. According to the Spokesman-Review, Benewah Creamery built the 38-foot-high bottle in a style known as literalism in advertising, along the original highway north out of Spokane. It was only 15 feet in diameter at first, was used to sell creamery products, and was enlarged in 1940.
The creamery's founder, Paul E. Newport, planned six bottle-shaped stores at about $3,700 each, but Spokane Historical says only two were completed, this one and another on Cedar Street. The Spokane firm Whitehouse and Price designed them; SpokaneTalk adds that W. G. Myers was the builder. The date is reported two ways: Spokane Historical gives 1934 for the Garland bottle and 1935 for the Cedar Street one, while the Spokesman-Review gives 1935 for Garland.
