FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 26-ton Radio Flyer wagon sculpture, twelve feet tall, stands in Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington, according to Visit Spokane's park listing, and children and adults climbed on it when it reopened in 2022. Its formal name is The Childhood Express. According to the Spokesman-Review, local artist Ken Spiering built it for the 1989 Centennial Celebration of Children. The sculpture measures 27 feet long, 12 feet wide and 12 feet tall, and it has a slide; children and adults were photographed on top of it, sliding down its white slide and swinging from the monkey bars underneath it when it reopened in 2022.
That reopening followed a $73,000 renovation, which began on 31 May 2022. Spokane Parks and Recreation said the work included stripping the paint and rust, making minor metal repairs and applying new primer and paint to match the original. Before then the wagon had been repainted only once in 33 years, and the parks department described the steel repairs as the first significant ones. The Spokesman-Review reported that Spiering advised the contractor on site. The wagon reopened to the public late on Saturday 2 July 2022, in time for the holiday weekend.
