FIELD GUIDE

The story

Every skatepark has obstacles; this one is breakfast. Bacon and Eggs Skatepark in Wilkeson, Washington, is a 3,600-square-foot concrete frying pan with two sunny-side-up eggs and a 30-foot piece of bacon to ride, jump and grind. The Courier-Herald reported its unveiling in April 2021 and called it a skatepark and pop-art installation.
Local artist John Hillding had helped connect the town with Grindline Skateparks when Wilkeson decided to build a skatepark, finished in 2014. Looking it over, he joked to Grindline's founder that part of it looked like a piece of bacon, and the idea grew from there. The paper reported that the pan is an exact replica of his wife's frying pan, scaled up 50 times. Grindline designers built computer models from the concept art; construction began in December 2020, and a crew sprayed the final layer of concrete around early April 2021. A giant spatula and metal coping were in early designs but dropped on cost.
