FIELD GUIDE
The story
Seen from the interstate south of Kingman, the dome at Yucca is a 40-foot geodesic sphere that has had several lives. The Center for Land Use Interpretation describes a multi-storey sphere on a pole, built in the 1970s as a restaurant called the Dinesphere for Lake Havasu Estates, a desert development that never materialised; Lake Havasu itself is over 30 miles away. Explore Kingman, the area's tourism site, gives a different origin: a sales office for the development, whose company, it says, was eventually indicted on charges of mail fraud, misrepresentation and failure to register lots. Both describe it as a private home at some point; Explore Kingman adds that it later became Area 66, a UFO museum dedicated to a rumoured 1953 flying-saucer crash near Kingman. In July 2025 Explore Kingman reported that the building was closed but remained a roadside curiosity, and described the dome as visible from the highway.
