FIELD GUIDE

The story

The Kingman Office of Tourism says that before 2021 the only way to drive under a Route 66 shield in Kingman was to arrive for the Route 66 Fun Run, where temporary drive-through shields had been used at the May event since 1991, though wear and spring winds meant some years had none. The tourism office and the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona commissioned a permanent one from Legacy Signs. Route 66 News reported that the Kingman Visitors Center unveiled the lighted shield on the Saturday night of 24 July 2021, with dozens of classic-car drivers passing under it, and that it was engineered to withstand the region’s gusty winds and stands near the Powerhouse, which houses the visitor centre and the Arizona Route 66 Museum. In December 2023 the same site called it “the famous Route 66 drive-through shield” while reporting a neon wedding-chapel sign to be set 200 feet to its west. In 2026 the tourism office’s Centennial page lists it as the city’s first Route 66 Centennial project and calls it a “must-see stop for travelers”.
