This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A giant fiberglass/sheet-metal donut sign mounted high atop the roof of a former Mrs. Chapman's Angel Food Donuts shop at 5590 E. 7th Street, Long Beach -- one of the 'Big Donut' roadside advertising sculptures built for the Chapman's chain (established 1954, named for the owner's wife) that once operated about 20 Southern California locations. The E. 7th Street sign faced demolition in early 2014 when the site was slated for a Dunkin' Donuts redevelopment; following public outcry from Long Beach preservation advocates, the franchise operator publicly committed at a February 2014 Planning Commission meeting to save and re-purpose the sign rather than demolish it. It remains standing on the roof today. Note: a separate, still-operating Mrs. Chapman's Angel Food Donuts shop exists at 3657 Santa Fe Ave, Long Beach -- the giant donut sign itself is at the 7th Street site.
