The story
This Giant carries the name of a person.
Yaburgurt Winjan Cirkelstone is one of the Giants of Mandurah, the trail of large-scale recycled-wood sculptures by the Danish artist Thomas Dambo, and it stands at Coodanup Foreshore Reserve. Visit Mandurah lists it as an accessible Giant reached by a short Grade 1 trail, city planning material identifies it at Coodanup Foreshore, and a geotagged openly licensed image fixes its position precisely.
Dambo's stated vision, in Visit Mandurah's own words, is to hide something so big within nature that people must seek it out – an inversion of everything the roadside tradition does, since these works are built to be found rather than seen from a car.
What this record deliberately does not do is describe what the work represents or explain the name it carries. Yaburgurt Winjan is the name of a Bindjareb Noongar elder, and a sculpture named for a specific Aboriginal person, on Bindjareb country, is not something a catalogue should interpret from tourism copy. That belongs to the community whose elder he was, and this entry is held for review with appropriate Bindjareb Noongar representatives before publication.
What can be stated is the object and its setting. Coodanup Foreshore sits on the Peel-Harvey estuary, one of the largest estuarine systems in south-western Australia and a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance for waterbirds.
The catalogue's other Mandurah Giant, Seba's Song, overlooks the Dawesville Cut further south.
The height and the installation date are not recorded here.
