The story

A pair of giant briefs that Guinness World Records gives as seven feet wide and six feet tall is displayed on the third floor of City Museum in St. Louis, and in 2024 it gave the museum the excuse for a world record. According to Guinness World Records, the briefs were created in 1997 by St. Louis artists Pat Eby and Ann Paidrick. They have a 16-foot waistband and measure 7 feet wide and 6 feet tall when laid out. The museum's website places them at Beatnik Bob's, otherwise known as the Museum of Mirth, Mystery, and Mayhem, in the centre of the third floor, and describes an "over 25-year-old pair of giant Tighty-Whities". The Post-Dispatch, reporting in July 2011 that the "Big Galloot" brand underpants had gone missing from their spot on the wall outside Beatnik Bob's, gave their size as 8 feet. On 14 March 2024, known in St. Louis as 314 Day after the city's area code, 355 people wore underwear on their heads for a full minute at the museum, against a goal of at least 314; Guinness said one child who removed the makeshift hat early was deducted from the count. The Post-Dispatch reported that this beat the previous record of 270, with a Guinness representative on hand. The event marked the arrival of the touring Science of Guinness World Records exhibition, which Guinness said was produced by Ripley's and Science North. Guinness noted that the museum's briefs are not officially the world's largest underpants. The museum describes the installations around them as ever-changing.
