A 15-foot-tall salt shaker sculpture of metal and glass in downtown Lyons, Kansas, that arrived in September 2024 and honours the town's salt mining. The city says that, as far as it knows, it is the world's largest; a Kansas Department of Commerce grant of nearly $14,000 helped fund it.

FIELD GUIDE
The story
Lyons, Kansas, sits on a salt bed, and in 2024 it put a 15-foot salt shaker on a downtown corner to say so.
KANSAS! Magazine reports that a developer drilling for oil and natural gas accidentally struck a salt bed in 1887, and that the town has built a legacy around the resource since. It says two salt mines still operate there. The idea of a giant shaker was announced in May 2023, when the city received nearly $14,000 from the Kansas Department of Commerce to build a city attraction. Lyons’ community development coordinator told KWCH that the aim was to give people “a reason to drive into downtown Lyons and see what we have going on down here”. Ad Astra Radio reported that Lyons Salt Company, Compass Minerals and other local donors were also supporting the project.
