FIELD GUIDE
The story
Hebron, Nebraska, built an oversized porch swing to draw visitors, and the town still lists it as a park attraction.
A local committee set out to unseat Seward as Nebraska’s Fourth of July city, according to the town’s own account, and settled on a swing as the way to do it. Visit Nebraska dates the swing to 1985. Its frame came from a section of obsolete centre-pivot irrigation equipment, the town says. One committee chair told the town that the swing cost $240 to build, with donated parts and labour, and that it was good advertising for the money.
