FIELD GUIDE
The story
Seguin, Texas, has claimed the title of world's largest pecan more than once, and it has two giant nuts to show for it.
The first dates from 1962. According to Texas Highways in 2024, local dentist Edmund “Doc” Darilek, who had planted a pecan orchard in 1958, made a pecan 5 feet long and weighing 1,000 pounds and displayed it beside the Guadalupe County Courthouse. He named it for Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, the 16th-century Spanish explorer who, the magazine says, called the Guadalupe River “the river of nuts”.
