FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 32-foot flute player now stands in a coffee-shop parking lot in Camp Verde, a roadside advertisement that has outlasted the shop it was built to promote.
The yellow steel figure is on Highway 260 just east of Interstate 17, and weighs about 5.5 tons, according to the Daily Independent in 2021. Atlas Obscura says the Krazy Kokopelli Trading Post was built at the height of "Kokopellimania", and its owner wanted a new roadside attraction to draw visitors to what was then the Montezuma Trading Post. He hired blacksmith Gerry Berg, who built it with his son, Gerry Berg Jr., from plate steel; a speaker was originally placed in the sculpture to attract visitors. The store later closed, and the Daily Independent reported that the building had become a coffee shop and a Mexican restaurant. According to Atlas Obscura, a cement foundation reads "World's Largest Kokopelli."
