FIELD GUIDE

The story

Winlock, Washington, was once billed as the egg and poultry capital of the world, and it still keeps a giant egg on show in the town.
According to HistoryLink, Winlock was the second-largest egg-producing city in the United States by 1922, behind Petaluma, California, and in 1923 the town commissioned a gigantic egg sculpture of canvas. MyNorthwest reports that it began as a float in a caravan from Olympia to Salem, Oregon, on 25 October 1923, marking the opening of the Pacific Highway. After the caravan the egg was put on display beside the mainline tracks.
