The story

Crutches are among the large carbon-steel everyday objects made in Staunton, Virginia, by Ferguson Metal Fabrication. According to Visit Staunton, Ferguson Metal Fabrication created large carbon-steel flower pots, nuts, books, eyeglasses, crutches and shoes for the city and for area businesses, and the pieces bring "a surprising touch of whimsy to the urban landscape." Visit Staunton also points to a giant watering can at the railroad underpass; Visit Shenandoah says the Augusta Garden Club and the City of Staunton commissioned it in 1999. The Society of Architectural Historians' Archipedia describes the maker's Claes Oldenburg-inspired jumbo sheet-metal flowerpots, shoes, coat hangers and crutches as gathered in a landscaped creekbank yard at the fabrication shop on the southwest side of town. No size, date or street location for the crutches is published.
