The story

Rothsay's concrete prairie chicken is a bicentennial monument to a bird known for its mating display. According to the City of Rothsay, the town was designated Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota three years after a 1972 football championship, and Art Fosse designed and engineered the monument to commemorate that. It was dedicated in mid-June 1976 as part of Rothsay's celebration of the nation's bicentennial. The city's history page adds that some people have called it, tongue in cheek, a monument to fertility.
The city lists the statue as 13 feet high and 18 feet long, weighing 9,000 pounds. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, in April 2026, calls it the world's largest booming prairie chicken, a reference to the birds puffing out orange neck sacs to make a booming sound in mating season. InForum described it in 2021 as a giant concrete bird that has stood near Interstate 94 since the 1970s, and said many people have stopped to be photographed beside it.
