FIELD GUIDE

The story

Oak Hill, Ohio, a village of about 1,400 people according to the Ohio Newsroom in January 2025, is promoted as home to the world's largest acorn, a title a Maryland historical society disputes. The idea came from the Oak Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, whose president told the Ohio Newsroom that after visiting other world's-largest attractions he asked why Oak Hill could not have one.
The Chamber first discussed the project in April 2022 and commissioned it in 2023 for the village's sesquicentennial. It had hoped to unveil it that autumn, but the build took longer. The Telegram reported that RoMar Metal Fabricating of Oak Hill made it from 20 panels of 14-gauge cold-rolled carbon steel after more than 500 man-hours of design and construction. The Ohio State Highway Patrol weighed it at 2,835 pounds. The Chamber collected more than $30,000 against a $25,000 estimate, and received a $10,000 Ohio Arts Council grant. It was unveiled in Central Memorial Park on 14 June 2025.
