The story

A 35-foot witch has loomed over North Country Road in St. James, on Long Island, since the 1970s, according to ABC7, and was reported still standing in August 2025. In 2023 local residents raised money to rebuild her.
According to ABC7 New York, Winnie the Witch was built in 1977 at Wicks Farms and Garden, now closed, as one of a group of towering characters created by David Wicks. Roadside America gives the same year and says she is made of metal, canvas and scrap wood. The date is not settled: News 12 in September 2023 said she was first built in 1976, and Greater Long Island also gave 1976, adding that she was made for the farm's annual Halloween experience, which no longer takes place. News 12 gave her height as 30 feet; ABC7 and Roadside America say 35.
