FIELD GUIDE
The story
Look closely at a wall beside South Ocean Boulevard in North Myrtle Beach and the details start to appear: mosaic flip-flops that seem to walk across the stone, a marble path that looks as if it comes from a fish’s mouth, random hands, petrified wood, more than 100 pieces of coral, and small statues of pirates, dogs and flowers. At night, eyes in the wall glow in the dark.
According to an August 2024 report in the Myrtle Beach Sun News, the couple who created it built it “as a way to give back to the community.” It holds 24 hidden treasure boxes, each with something a finder can take home; the owner replaces whatever is taken. Visitors also look for a hidden Where’s Waldo figure, and the owner counted 72 smiles in the stonework. He began the wall about four years before that report, it took several months to build, and he was still adding to it. Roadside America visitors give different counts of hidden compartments, 25 in a September 2024 tip and 32 in a May 2025 tip.
