FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 63-foot hot dog sits on top of a restaurant in Mackinaw City, just before the Mackinac Bridge. DBusiness reported that it drew attention from people passing on I-75 at the base of the bridge.
The sculpture crowns Wienerlicious, a hot dog restaurant whose address is 102 E. Central Ave, according to a 2023 WMMQ report. WGRD says it was created in 2014 by Ron Berman, a former Disney Imagineer, who also built a 30-foot grizzly bear in the town. DBusiness, in an article on the sculpture's addition, quotes Berman giving its size as 63 feet long, 15 feet 2 inches high and 12 feet wide, weighing about 2.4 tons. It is made of steel, spray polyurethane foam and fiberglass. Berman said he was "a urethane man", and the foam was supplied by Great Lakes Roofing and Insulation of Sault Ste. Marie. He also said the design and finished sculpt exceeded the wind loads required by the permit.
