FIELD GUIDE

The story

The White Horse is not a statue. It is a figure laid out across a hillside above Waimate, in the tradition of the chalk hill figures of southern England, and it is best understood as landscape rather than sculpture.
It was built in 1968, is about 18.3 metres high and 14.6 metres long, and is made from 1,220 concrete slabs set into the slope. The animal is a Clydesdale – the heavy draught horse that did the work of breaking in and farming South Canterbury before machinery took over. Waimate's European settlement dates from the mid-1850s, and the district's early decades ran on horses of exactly this kind. The figure is a memorial to the animal that built the place.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The restored White Horse remains actively promoted above Waimate, with viewing platforms, picnic facilities, toilets and an upper car park. Council completed safety/sealing upgrades on Centrewood Park Road in 2025; the remaining task is precise car-park geometry, not whether vehicle access exists.
ACCESS
The White Horse is a current public attraction at Centrewood Park. Waimate District Council confirms Centrewood Park Road is the vehicle route up to the monument after 2025 safety upgrades, and recent visitor evidence confirms a real White Horse car park at the top. PBT’s former parking reference at -44.73, 171.04 was 3.1 km from the monument and was not the upper car park, so it has been removed. Direct navigation remains withheld until that actual upper car park is independently pinned.
