The story

There is a sleeping dragon in a shop in the SkyCity complex, and meeting it costs nothing.

Wētā Workshop's Auckland store leads with giant trolls and a sleeping dragon at its entrance, and the workshop's own visitor information promotes them as the reason to come in – free entry, photo opportunities, no booking required. That combination is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly: a substantial larger-than-life installation in a central city, with no ticket.

The trolls and the dragon are drawn from the workshop's screen work, and the making is the point of them. Wētā's reputation rests on physical effects – sculpted, moulded, painted objects rather than rendered ones – and a store that puts full-scale creature work at the door is demonstrating the trade rather than merchandising it.

It also marks a shift in where that work is displayed. For twelve years Wellington Airport carried the workshop's eagles, Gandalf and Gollum, and those came down in 2025. Auckland's SkyCity store now holds the most accessible free display of Wētā creature work in the country.

Whether the trolls belong to a Big Things catalogue at all is a fair question. They are commercial retail theming rather than roadside sculpture, and they are indoors. They are included because they are unambiguously larger than life, unambiguously public and unambiguously the reason people come.
