FIELD GUIDE

The story

Wave is a brushed stainless-steel sculpture at the Paterson Plank Road entrance of Washington Park, a Hudson County park shared by Jersey City and Union City. It stands 14 feet high and 35 feet wide, according to the Jersey City Heights business district's public art guide and the park's own description quoted by Get Outside NJ. Hudson County's Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs says Wave, by Chakaia Booker, was unveiled in October 2008 as a permanent public art installation of the county's Public Arts Program, which the county says was established in 2008. The county's arts page lists three completed installations in county parks: Wave, one at Stephen R. Gregg Park in Bayonne and one at JJ Braddock Park in North Bergen. Booker was born in Newark in 1953. A gallery biography describes her as known for monumental abstract works made from recycled tires and stainless steel. The Jersey City Heights guide places it at the intersection of Central Avenue and Paterson Plank Road.
