FIELD GUIDE

The story

The park's own site calls Vulcan a burly, bearded, bare-bottomed man towering over the city, and he has looked down from Red Mountain since the 1930s. The Roman god of fire and the forge was chosen to advertise Alabama's iron industry at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.
According to the Encyclopedia of Alabama, the Commercial Club of Birmingham took on the exhibit in 1903. It first called for a figure 50 feet tall, then added six feet to surpass a 52-foot bronze Buddha in Tokyo. Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti designed Vulcan beside an anvil, with a spear point raised in his right hand and a hammer in his left. The statue was cast with iron made from Red Mountain ore, and it won a grand prize at the fair. Offers from St. Louis and San Francisco to buy it were refused, and it came home in 1905.
