A 21-foot fiberglass Viking statue nicknamed 'Erik' stands atop the entrance overhang of Hillcrest High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Built by the International Fiberglass Company (Venice, California) and installed in late 1972/early 1973, it was donated free of charge by Ted Shuler, president of Schuler Distributing Company (Viking Carpets) and head of the Hillcrest booster club, as a promotional tie-in and booster gift. A hidden audio system once made the statue say 'good morning' and 'good evening' to students until vandalism silenced it in the late 1980s. The statue still stands and has recently been restored (repainted, new supports) as part of renovations by the school's current charter operator, Green Dot Public Schools.
