FIELD GUIDE

The story

Vergas keeps a 20-foot loon beside Long Lake. The bird was dedicated on 30 June 1963 and was built in memory of Ewald Krueger, a Vergas postmaster, who according to the Detroit Lakes Tribune in 2013 looked after Long Lake Park for many years, tending flowers and clearing litter.
The Tribune reported that the community built it together. Four local men spearheaded construction, the Vergas Fire Department gave the first $100, and residents donated time and materials. The idea came from the loon being Minnesota's state bird. The paper described the statue as making Vergas home to the largest loon in the world; Mpls.St.Paul Magazine noted in 2026 that Vergas was once home to the largest loon, and that St. Paul now claims the title with a statue near Allianz Field.
