FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 49-foot animatronic lumberjack who greets visitors with "Hello there!" is the welcome at Trees of Mystery in Klamath, California. The park's own page gives Paul Bunyan's height as 49 feet 2 inches and his weight as 30,000 pounds, and Babe the Blue Ox as 35 feet at the horn tips and the same weight. The park says Paul also talks to visitors crossing its parking lot, comments on their clothing and asks children riddles.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation's magazine writes of a big hand wave and a "Hello there!", and that at 49 feet he is "a strong candidate for largest in the world".
