FIELD GUIDE
The story
Neil Dawson noticed feathers being whisked around by the wind during a site visit, and built a seventeen-metre one weighing twenty-five tonnes.
Touchdown stands above the Transmission Gully motorway north of Wellington, visible from the road, on The Morgans sculpture trail. The name is doing a lot of work: a feather touching down implies it has been falling, and a twenty-five-tonne object frozen at the instant of landing is the joke and the engineering problem at once.
