FIELD GUIDE
The story
Along the restaurant row of Highway 17, a giant crab sits above the doorway of a seafood buffet. Tommy crowns the Giant Crab Seafood Restaurant at 9597 North Kings Highway, which the restaurant describes as resembling a fisherman's wharf village. The restaurant calls him its "big, fat giant crab" and says he is affectionately known as Tommy.
According to a 2024 Myrtle Beach Sun News profile, the restaurant opened in 2001 and Tommy went up about six months later. He is made of fibreglass over reinforced steel rods, stands 25 feet tall and 34 feet wide, and weighs over four tons. The paper reported that the owner spent about $175,000 on the statue, and that the World Record Academy calls him the largest crab statue in the world.
