The story

A bronze statue of Tina Turner stands in the Tennessee town where she grew up. The Associated Press reported that the 10-foot statue was unveiled on 27 September 2025 at a park in Brownsville, about an hour's drive east of Memphis, during the annual Tina Turner Heritage Days. The city of about 9,000 people is near Nutbush, where Turner went to school as a child. AP said that as a teenager she attended high school just steps from where the statue now stands.
Sculptor Fred Ajanogha modelled the figure in clay in Atlanta, and a West Tennessee foundry cast it in bronze; AP said the work took about a year. It gave the dimensions as 7 feet 9 inches tall on a 2-foot base. Ajanogha said he tried to capture her movement on stage, the way she held the microphone with her index finger extended, and her hair, which he compared to the "mane of a lion". About 50 donors paid for the statue, including Ford Motor Co., which gave $150,000.
