FIELD GUIDE
The story
In 2024 a Virginia Commonwealth University paper described a face of woven metal bands on the side of Richmond's police headquarters. The paper says Thin Blue Line was installed in 2005 and looms a story above the road below it. Style Weekly in 2009 named it among the most recognised works from the city's One Percent for the Arts programme. A photographer's website describes it as 12 feet tall in woven stainless steel and puts the cost to the city at $140,000. Artist Michael Stutz said at the February 2005 unveiling, as quoted on that website, that it was meant to project "a very human aspect to the police force," and also, "it's a face made out of steel, so it's very strong." The work has drawn varied responses. Commission member Sally Bowring told Style Weekly in 2009 it had become a meeting place, while the 2024 paper, by undergraduate author Kade McGrail, argues that it is received as a symbol of intimidation and oppression and cites negative interactions with it during the 2020 protests.
