FIELD GUIDE

The story

Few roadside buildings state their business as plainly as The Tamale, a lunch stand built in the shape of the food it sold. It was standing at 6421 Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles in 2022, where, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy, it opened in 1928 along a stretch that catered to motorists driving into and out of the neighbourhood.
The Conservancy calls it a highly intact example of programmatic architecture, a style designed to catch a driver's eye that it dates to 1918 to 1941 in Southern California. Inside the giant tamale the original owners served Mexican and American food. PBS SoCal added in 2022 that malted milk, hamburgers, pie and chili were also on the menu, and that preservationists at Esotouric called the boulevard "Oddball Row" for the novelty buildings that once lined it. As those disappeared, The Tamale ended up among furniture stores, medical offices and realtors.
