FIELD GUIDE
The story
A sculpture shaped like a giant water droplet is described as beside the Vancouver Convention Centre on the Burrard Inlet waterfront. It is the work of Inges Idee, an artists' group from Germany that the Convention Centre says was founded in Berlin in 1992.
The Convention Centre describes The Drop as "a long and slender sculpture in the form of a gigantic and elegant water droplet" and places it at Bon Voyage Plaza, facing the east building. Inges Idee's own project page gives the year as 2009 and the height as 18 metres, says the work gets its tension from balancing on one point of its lower surface, and credits it as commissioned by Public Art Management Toronto. The artists call it "a surprising and simultaneously laconic landmark". Destination Vancouver dates the piece to 2008 instead; the artists date the project to 2009, and the Convention Centre's page gives both 2008 (in the artists' text it quotes) and 2009 (in the artists' project list), so the date is given here as the artists give it.
