FIELD GUIDE
The story
The Donut Hole in La Puente is a doughnut shop built in 1968 with a driveway running through its middle, bracketed at each end by an enormous fibreglass doughnut. The Los Angeles Conservancy describes it as a wood-and-stucco one-story commercial building split into two halves, with customers driving through to place and pick up orders, and calls it one of Southern California's best examples of programmatic architecture, in which a building's form advertises what it sells. According to the Conservancy it was the second of five Donut Hole locations, the only one with doughnuts built into the architecture, and the only one that survives intact. In a page updated in 2024, it says the shop had operated continuously as a doughnut shop since it was built, has appeared in a number of films and is one of the most photographed doughnut shops in the country. The Conservancy lists it among its L.A. Legacy Businesses.
