The story
The Canoes is a sculpture by the artist Donald Lipski on the pedestrian overlook of the rebuilt Lesner Bridge, at the Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach. The Public Art Virginia Beach Foundation, whose board is private volunteer citizens, raised the money by donation and presented it to the city. WTKR reported in July 2018 that a public dedication was planned for Saturday 28 July at 11 a.m. The foundation's page describes a 36-foot sculpture of ten aluminium canoes, each with a lace-like filigree cut into it that it says recalls the decorative arts of early settlers, joined in a sunburst above a tall arch. It lists aluminium and stainless steel as the materials; Visit Virginia Beach calls it a stainless steel installation. It adds that the work is lit by LED lights in the evening and has a seating area overlooking the water. Visit Virginia Beach was still listing it among the city's must-see artworks in early 2026.
