FIELD GUIDE
The story
Minnesota's state bird appears as a 25-ton stainless-steel loon beside Allianz Field in St. Paul, shown emerging from the water with its wings spread.
The Calling is a loon designed by Andy Scott, a Scottish-born artist. The Allianz Field page says it stands 32 1/2 feet tall, measures 89 1/2 feet from wingtip to wingtip and weighs 25 tons, and that Scott spent over two years on it, with fabricating partner Dyson & Womack. MSP magazine rounds the figures to 33 feet and nearly 90 feet. The stadium says it is made of over 50,000 individually designed stainless-steel feathers, and MSP gives about 50,000; a Minnesota United news story gives more than 5,000.
