FIELD GUIDE

The story

Tex Randall is a cowboy 47 feet tall, and for most of his life he has been a landmark just north of downtown in the Texas Panhandle town of Canyon. The Texas Historical Commission marker beside him says Harry Wheeler, a teacher by profession, built him in 1959 to welcome travellers to his curio shop on U.S. Highway 60.
According to the marker, Wheeler spent ten months working with six-inch wire mesh, rebar and concrete, and a friend welded the pipe and rebar frame. The statue weighs seven tons. Levi’s made the pants and an Amarillo awning company made the shirt, and the clothes were hand-stitched at the back with sailboat thread. A resident told Texas Standard in 2020 that the real jeans would not stay up in the West Texas wind, so the clothes were painted on instead. The marker says reconstruction of the highway cut the shop’s trade and Wheeler sold the property in 1963.
